The theme that I have chosen is 'Openings',Ii chose this theme in-particular because they are every where, for example there are openings between curtains, there are openings in smashed windows etc.
It is very easy to find openings, you will see them in your everyday life, every where, you will probably even see them when you are walking down the street. If you click on the two little arrows in the bottom right hand corner, you will be able to see my whole poppet, it gives you examples of different openings and pictures to show you all sorts of openings. The image to the left is just one example of an opening, and it is a smashed window. I chose this picture out of all of the example because it shows you exactly what an opening is. Also I like the fact that it shows you straight through the broken glass to show you the building out side, and the person that edited this image was clever enough to blur out the remaining glass and keep the building in the background clear so it stands out more. |
Clarence John Laughlin
Clarence was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana but moved to Orleans at an early age. Self taught in photography as well as a wide range of other subjects, he began her career as a freelancer, producing mostly architectural photos, and eventually moved on to work for such varled agency's such as vogue magazine and the us army corps of engineers. His work was influenced Eugene Atget and historical purists who tried to capture an urban landscape. This photo seems to be clarences most famous image, this most probably goes under the theme of disguise with only half of the women's face showing and the other half is of what looks like a statue. Uta Barth
Barth received a bachelor of arts degree from the university of California, Davis and a masters of fine arts from the university of California,Los Angeles From 1990 to 2008, she was a professor in the art department of the university of California, Riverside, where she is currently a professor of art emeritus. Uta Barths work os represented in numerous public and private collections worldwide, including the museum of modern art, the metropolitan museum of art, the solomon,R. Guggenheim museum, also some of her work is placed in the most famous museum in London, the Tate. Lee Miller Elizabeth "Lee" Miller was an american photographer, she was also a very successful fashion model in New York. After a few years of being a model in new york Lee then moved to paris where she then became fashion designer and also took an interest in fine art photography. Also when she was in Paris she worked with a well known surrealist artist and photographer Man Ray, and succeeded in establishing her own studio. She became known as a portraitist and photographer, but her most enduring body of work is that of her surrealist images. Lee then returned to New York where she again set up her own studio, which ran for two years and was highly successful, it closed down when she married and wealthy Egyptian businessman and moved to Cairo, Egypt. |
I went around the school for about 1hour all together taking photo's of different openings, openings in between trees and a whole field which is a huge opening, people refer to it as an open space. In total I took around 30 images to show all sorts of openings, openings outside and some inside. I also took pictures inside through glass. There is only one thing i don't like about these images is that they are all taken at the same image which makes them look quite boring and not appealing to the person viewing the pictures.
These are the photos I took the other day to fit in my theme 'openings'. This time when I took these photos, I didn't rush them like I did previous photo's. This time you can see clearly what the theme is supposed to be.
I used to keep repeating the same photo's but I changed it up a bit when I took the photo's, for example I took a picture of things such as the opening's in a stair railing and instead of taking photo's at a normal angel I changed it up a bit by taking them at different angels.

Final Piece
These are my three favourite images, because in each photo it is clear what the them is, I have chosen the theme openings.
I think that all three of these images have something in common, firstly because they are all in the same theme but also if you hadn't noticed all three of the images have 'barriers' in a way, for example, the first image has all the polls going all the way down, on the second photo there's the handle and the window, finally on the third image the door and the two polls are like barriers. This is the same throughout all of my images. Also to have an opening in your image you have to have two or more things so stop it from being a large scale opening and instead of being an opening turns into something else. I chose to put a black and white effect on each of the images as I found that this particular effect gives the images a more professional and refined look. I laid out the images in this particular way as I think that it gives them a better look unlike if they were just in a straight line for example if they were horizontal or vertical. |
Display Strategies
These are two display strategies that I really liked because, they are both different and unusual also they both use more then one image to create the picture, instead if being plain and simple and use one image. In the second display strategy it straight away caught my attention because of all of the different colours and shapes. The first display strategy caught my attention because of the use of different images to create one whole image, also the person that created this piece used different tones.
Final Evaluation
I enjoyed this project, being able to experiment with different display strategies and see what ones we would like to use for our final piece. In this project I have also enjoyed being able to go out and take pictures of different things and having a theme which is also very helpful because you have a structure to go on, instead of just winging it throughout. Each artist that I researched all gave me different ideas about what to do for my images and what to have in mind when taking all of the images, for example each image that was about openings reminded me of something being restricted and trapped.
