Frank Gilbrth
Frank started to study light painting with his wife Lilian, this picture was taken when they were studying Micromotion, which they achieved by attaching a camera(Digital) to a timing device. The Gilberths traveled across the united states, lecturing to engineering and manufacturing audiences. Frank done a three year apprentice course, and at the age of 27 he started his own contracting firm, where he patented many inventions, including a concrete mixer and a concrete conveyor. And that is just what he started with he then moved on to doing bigger projects and inventing things to do with light, that is when he adopted the slogan 'Speed Work'. |
Man Ray
Man Ray opened the shutter on his camera and sat in front of his camera, and the he got a penlight and started to draw a series of swirls and loops. Because of his movement with the penlight man ray's face was blurred in the resulting photograph. As a self portrait, titled - Space writing. But now Ellen Carey, a photographer whose similar working methods were similar to Man ray's, had discovered something that's been hidden in plain sight for the past 74years, the artist's signature (Man Ray), signed with penlight in the swirls and loops

John Hesketh
Hesketh used his house, his yard and the cul-di-sac for the background of his photo's. He used everyday objects that don't have much relevance in most of his images. He often used his personal life to help inspire his images. I chose this image in particular because of the many different colours that he has used which represents what you can do using light painting. Also by using the light painting on the clothes the models are wearing, gives the image a more refined look because if he left the clothes it may of looked slightly unfinished. |
I find light painting very different and unique, I also find it very beautiful because of how smooth it the light appears. But you can find all sorts of light painting's the most common light paintings are Loops and swirls and some people even right there name. When you do light painting you can do whatever you want there is never anything specific that you have to draw you can be very creating about what you want to do.
In most of our compositions we made sure that there was people in the centre, and we had people behind the model so they could draw objects around the model, for example, angel wings.
We used a whole range of settings on the camera's when we did light painting, the most used setting was F4 and 10seconds. We kept these settings throughout the time we were taking the images because we found that this worked best throughout all of the images and we could see clearly everything that was trying to be drawn.

This is one of my favourite image because there is enough light so you can see me and the other girl. Also you can see the writing that we did, but you can't really see what we were trying to wrote which is the only down side to this image. To improve this image I we could of turned off one of the lights that was on behind the camera also slightly change the settings on the camera.
